This work draws on four foundational accounts, but it also leans on declassified military documents, after-action reports, field records, and hundreds of personal accounts shared with me over the years.
The crown jewel was Captain Lowell D. Bittrich's meticulous post-action report — an unvarnished, boots-on-the-ground chronicle that anchored everything else in fact and precision. He also patiently entertained my many follow-up questions across the years, for which I remain deeply grateful.
In addition to the aforementioned names, I had the privilege of speaking with those who fought on Hill 65 directly or indirectly, including but not limited to John “Dutch” Holland, Charlie (and Jan) Curtis, Major General (Ret.) Richard “Dick” Chegar, Bob Gregson, Bill Golembieski, Floyd Riester, Melody Conetto, and Daniel Simons.
Their recollections — some sharp, others hazy or haunted — form the spine of this book. I also thank Lt. Col. (Rtd) Fred Fairhead for his thoughtful write-up in planning for the 60th Anniversary in 2025.
